I had won the first set and was winning the second set by two games. It was the finals. Thoughts and different strategies recurring in my mind. “I can do this; I’m going to win this match.” I would keep reassuring myself over and over. I was exhausted, but I was persistent, I would not give up this final match after how hard I had worked to get there.
Before I knew it, it was match point for me to win. When she served, I was ready to return the ball effortlessly. The tennis ball landed in the court (thank god!) and that was all it took. Her next shot didn’t get to me; it was left in the net. I had won the match. We met each other at the net; she congratulates me, I tell her that she’ll beat me next time (ok... that was a lie).
I realized that as long as you keep on trying, you can achieve anything.

Spanish Homework
My first grade Spanish teacher would assign the class really easy Spanish worksheets, in which I found it to be a complete waste of time to do. After all, not turning them in wasn’t affecting my grade at all at the time.
I would take home the worksheets and hide them all under my bed. I didn’t throw them in the trash because I thought my parents would find it there and find out about the homework. My plan actually worked for a little while. Until my mom was cleaning out my room and found the pile of about two months worth of Spanish homework unfinished.
My punishment was to finish all the worksheets and turn them into to my Spanish teacher by the end of the quarter. In addition to that, I had to write a book report in Spanish and turn it into her along with everything else.
I realized that even though something may seem pointless, I should still complete it because if I don’t, I could spend my time doing even more work. I also learned that if you keep putting something off, it all piles up and then you have a ton of worksheets to do.

Gone
The sad memory of my family and I sitting on the church benches, drowned in tears, recurs in my mind to this day.
My great- grandmother talking about all the wonderful times she and her husband had together, except now things were different. Her husband, my grandma’s dad, my mom’s grandfather, and my great-grandfather was gone. And I don’t mean ‘on a trip’ gone, I mean he’s gone and he’s never coming back.
I would no longer see him at my birthday, during Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter. I would never see him sitting in the audience with the rest of my family on the day of my graduation. He would never see my dreams come true.
Although, I realized that I was wrong. I may not see him standing right in front of my eyes, bue he will be watching over me and I’ll look up to him forever and always.

Jellyfish
“It will be fine, just run in as quickly as possible and you’ll be okay.” Dad assures me.
“I don’t know, are you sure this is safe? I mean, it is the middle of jellyfish season!” I say trying to convince him this is a bad idea.
“Trust me! Nothing is going to sting you!”
“Fine, but if I get stung, it’s your entire fault!” I yell back to him.
“Okay, Okay, just come on in.” he says. I run as fast as I can into the ocean. My feet stepping on shells and little rocks. Before I know it, I’m shoulder deep in the water.
“This isn’t so bad… maybe I was over exaggerating a little bit” I say. It turns out that I spoke a bit too soon. I took one false step and everything went wrong from there. I have stepped on a jellyfish and it stung me. The pain was excruciating and my whole body got cold all of a sudden after being stung.
“OWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!” I yelp in pain and shock.
“What… what happened?” Dad asks, alarmed
“I got stung by a jellyfish, Dad!! And it REALLY hurts” I say in between sobs. He immediately grabs my hand and helps me out of the freezing water. My foot is red and swollen.
“Are you okay?”
“I don’t know, all I know is that it really hurts/ stings.”
“Sorry…. It’ll be okay.”
“Thanks” I reply.
That day, I realized that parents aren’t always right and that if I’m unsure of something, then don’t do it because I am probably unsure of it for a reason.
